FOOD SAFETY CENTRAL

AN EYE-OPENING LOOK AT CHINA

May 21, 2007 · Leave a Comment

After pet-food scandal, Americans finally beginning to question China’s trade policies.

Remember when your mom told you to finish your plate because of all those starving people in China? They’re probably still starving even though their government exports $30 billion in food and drugs to the rest of the world.

But, maybe there is hope for them. As countries around the world start refusing to accept Chinese food exports, maybe they’ll use the food to feed their own people.

Hundreds of Sparkys, Fluffys and Spots were poisoned to death because some Chinese guys decided to get rich by passing off their wheat starch as wheat gluten by adding the poison melamine. The melamine entered the U.S. pet-food supply and then spread from there to feed for pigs, fish and chickens, and thus was consumed – in supposedly trace amounts – by humans.

Powerful food companies such as Kraft and Kellogg are now putting pressure on Washington to put pressure on China to clean up their act. Everyone is afraid that the American public will wake up to all of China’s institutionalized cheating and demand a boycott of Chinese products.

That is probably inevitable unless China does something fast. American businesses have for years accepted the notion that Chinese factories will rip them off and sell their products in other markets. Washington is putting pressure on them to end that practice.

Now, they’ll have to add “And stop sending us poisoned products” to their list of demands. In recent years, the number of recalls of Chinese products has skyrocketed. Last week, Wal-Mart recalled baby bibs from all their stores after they tested high in lead. And other countries have had people die from Chinese medicines.

Because China offers an enormous market for American products and services as well as offering cheap processing for American companies, business has turned a blind eye for years to their lack of integrity. That era is already over.
