With the USDA suspension of beef from California slaughterhouses, schoolchildren will have to “eat more chikin.”
With the release of the video by the Humane Society, the USDA has put a hold on all of the beef distributed to schools around the country by the Hallmark Meat Co. of Chino, California as part of the federally sponsored lunch program.
Hallmark is also under investigation by the USDA not just for mistreatment of “downed” or sick cattle, but for illegally placing the sick cattle into the food supply. In a statement by Secretary of Agriculture Frank Schafer, the USDA condemned any mistreatment of animals. Schafer also took a shot at the Humane Society, saying they should have informed the government back in the fall, when they first knew about Hallmark.
Private companies are also canceling their orders with Hallmark. In N Out Burger President Mark Taylor said that, in response to the video, his company would no longer do business with Hallmark.
