Bantry Bay mussels

The FDA has issued a warning against eating Bantry Bay (Ireland) Seafood’s mussels because of certain naturally occuring toxins that could cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps.

The toxins, known as azaspiracid, cannot be destroyed by freezing or cooking. Two people in Washington state became ill from the mussels, prompting the FDA to test the imported shellfish. American shellfish are not affected by this particular toxin; it is only known to infect shellfish from the old country.
